37% Rise in Used Cooking Oil Collection in Baltics, 2000 Sustainable Partner Recognition Certificates Issued

Every day, Biomotorai clients collect used cooking oil in their restaurants, hotels, and food production kitchens. This simple daily step – cook, cool, collect – gathered drop by drop results in impressive volumes of used cooking oil. Later this oil is being repurposed as a raw material for biofuel production allowing businesses to protect wastewater systems and our nature’s resources.

To recognize these efforts, since 2019 we have been issuing official client sustainability recognition certificates highlighting each client’s contribution in terms of collected oil volumes and the corresponding CO₂ emissions avoided. This year, we issued nearly 2,000 certificates across the Baltic States to the clients with the biggest amounts of collected cooking oil.

Company director Donatas Karanauskas issuing certificates.

“We’ve been collecting used cooking oil for almost two decades and can confidently say – people’s habits are changing. Restaurants and other food service providers are increasingly concerned with both food quality and environmental impact. As a result, the quality of the collected oil improves each year, making it more efficient to recycle and reuse,” said company director Donatas Karanauskas.

A 37% Increase in Collected Cooking Oil from 2023 to 2024

As the leading company of used cooking oil collection and recycling in the Baltic States, we aim to achieve 100% oil waste recycling by 2035. While this is an ambitious target, our progress to date gives us confidence. Between 2023 and 2024 alone, the volume of used cooking oil collected across Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia grew by an impressive 37%, underscoring both the potential and momentum of sustainable practices in the region.

Avoided CO₂ emissions: 12,541,785.34 kg

Equivalent to avoiding the burning of: 4.68 million liters of diesel

Client Sustainability Recognition Certificates issued: 1,951 units

What rising used cooking oil volumes reveal about sustainability in the Baltics?

The increasing amount of used oil collected and processed into biodiesel shows that Baltic markets are actively engaging in circular economy practices and advancing bioenergy development. Countries that establish robust collection and logistics systems also help strengthen national and regional energy supply chains.

“Used cooking oil is a highly valuable raw material used in biofuel production, especially in transport sectors where electrification is not yet effective – such as heavy-duty transport, shipping, or aviation. That’s why oil collection and recycling is becoming a vital part of the circular economy. Recognizing our role in this system, we aim to carry out this process as sustainably, reliably, and efficiently as possible – contributing to long-term climate goals.” — Donatas Karanauskas

It’s estimated that by 2028, avoided CO₂ emissions from used oil will grow by ~20% annually
